Let's stop blaming 2020

I think it's fair to say the year 2020 will go down in history as one of the most trying and chaotic years in our lifetimes.

But the year itself--2020-- is not the problem. It's us. It's humanity.

Racism, climate change, a country with no plan to handle a pandemic, a threatened democracy, resorting to conspiracies because reality is too hard to accept, are not just happening because it's 2020. It's not the year. What we are all dealing with are systemic problems. It just so happens that 2020 is when everything came to a head. Like a great big zit.

Popping a zit, Belushi Style

If anything 2020 is doing us a big favor.

2020 is saying, "Yo, Humanity. WTF?! You've got some serious s&%t going on and you need to get your house in order. Regardless of what humanity does, time and the planet are moving forward, and we will leave you behind regardless if you aren't up for a change."

Anyone banking on things miraculously changing for the better come January 1, 2021, better not hold their breath. Just wishing or expecting change won't make change happen. We all have a lot of work to do.

It's gonna take humanity helping humanity to save humanity.

As a Somatic Educator, Personal Trainer, and Behavioral Change Coach, I don't tell people what to do. I aim to help them help themselves. The work I do is about helping people raise the proverbial mirror to themselves, so they can truly reflect on what they are actually doing. Which can be a sticky, icky state to be in for lots of us.  Often people think they know what they are doing, or they deny they are doing, or have no idea what they are doing. In the Somatics world we call this unknown/unaware sense of ourselves sensory motor amnesia. We are out of touch with our true patterns and habits. Being unaware of our patterns holds us back from creating lasting change.

Let me relate the dumpster fire that is 2020 to, oh I don't know, someone freshly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (but really it could be any physical/mental/emotional manifestation of a condition/syndrome/disorder).

A diabetes diagnosis today, really means one's body has been in a state of dis-ease long before they were diagnosed. The diabetes didn't just happen today. It's been in the making for years. By the time the diabetes diagnosis rolled around there were systemic health problems throughout their body meaning many organs of the body (eyes, brain, heart, nervous system, kidneys) are under threat from the disease.

The patient may blame his diabetes on genetics. He may feel he has no actual control over his body, so why bother taking care of it. He may live in a highly stressed environment that makes his body more susceptible to dis-ease.

You could substitute any of the disasters and chaos we are facing this year for the diabetes diagnosis.

The problems we face this year were a long time coming.

And just like if you wanted to reverse your diabetes diagnosis, it's gonna take more than just wishing, ignoring or denying what brought you to this day, and what it will take to change the future.
